$200 - $600 USD/month per mentee, plus performance bonuses
The role
You help experienced data professionals in the US and Canada land their next
$100K to $300K role, faster and with less chaos. You own client outcomes
end to end: skills roadmap, marketing, interview pipeline, interview skills, and the offer.
You coach mid to senior data professionals (DA, DS, DE, MLE) one on one, hold them
accountable to a clear system, and use real data from their job search to re-plan every two
weeks. If you love mentoring and enjoy turning messy job searches into clear systems, this
is for you.
At a glance
Clients. 5 to 30 active mentees once you are ramped.
Who you coach. Mid to senior DA, DS, DE, and MLE professionals in the
US and Canada targeting $100K to $300K roles.
Scope. Skills roadmap, portfolio and LinkedIn, lead generation,
interviews, and negotiation.
Schedule. Fully remote and flexible, with agreed response times and
some overlap with EDT for calls.
What you win on
Client NPS. Overall and by lead level.
Churn rate. Measured by package.
Milestones hit on time. Roadmap, marketing, interviews, and offers.
Referrals, upsells, and outcomes. High performance is rewarded with
better client assignments, higher effective earnings, and more responsibility.
What you will own from day one
Client outcomes and accountability
Run 1:1 mentoring sessions and async reviews that set clear two-week action
plans and translate the program into concrete daily and weekly tasks.
Keep clients on pace for the estimated timeline for their lead level.
Review and approve client work: roadmaps, trackers, outreach, and portfolio assets, plus
interview prep, mock interviews, and negotiation plans.
Monitor pipeline and progress in our trackers, move clients between pipeline groups based
on real interview data, and spot stuck patterns early so you can re-plan with them.
Communication, responsiveness, and churn prevention
Meet the agreed response times in Slack and other channels based on the client's package.
Use positive accountability: direct, kind, clear expectations, and
follow-through.
Watch for risk signals: missed check-ins, repeated deadline misses, negative sentiment, or
a drop in execution.
Escalate early to leadership and QA when a client is at risk of churning, partner on the
save plan, and turn demoters back into promoters where possible.
Data, systems, and documentation
Keep client notes, action plans, and decisions up to date in our systems.
Log the milestones that matter: time to first interview, time to offer, and NPS over time.
Use that data to adjust the roadmap every two weeks, improve your own mentoring playbook,
and feed insights back to the team.
Team collaboration and product improvement
Join mentor huddles, QA calls, and training sessions.
Share patterns and best practices so the whole team raises its bar.
Turn common 1:1 issues into scalable lessons, SOPs, or tools.
Own your performance: track your own numbers, request feedback, and propose experiments
that improve outcomes.
Requirements
Proven experience in a data role (DA, DS, DE, MLE, analytics, or similar).
You have already managed, mentored, led, or coached others, formally or informally.
Comfortable giving direct, honest feedback while staying supportive.
Able to break complex topics like skills, interviews, and strategy into step-by-step actions.
Fluent with remote tools: Slack, Loom, Trello, Google Suite, Git.
Able to balance multiple clients while staying organized and calm.
Able to support a minimum of 5 mentees after the first 3 months, with interest in growing
beyond that if performance is strong.
You live our values: resilient growth, give more than expected, data-driven, extreme ownership.
Nice to have
Experience with North American data hiring processes in the US and Canada.
Past responsibility for hiring, interviewing, or promotion decisions.
A public content, writing, or teaching background.
Compensation
You are paid a monthly retainer per active client, typically
$200 to $600 USD per client per month depending on seniority and scope, plus
performance bonuses tied to placements, client satisfaction, and timelines.
Typical part-time mentors (5 to 10 clients) earn around
$2,000 to $5,000 USD per month.
Strong full-time mentors (20 to 30 clients) can earn
$10,000 to $25,000+ USD per month, with higher upside for top performers.
Hiring process
Application submitted and reviewed.
Initial screening interview, situational questions and career goals.
Case study and presentation interview. You prepare a case study, then we run a mock call on
how you would handle real situations.
Possible team fit and performance review interview.
Training and onboarding
Day 1. Welcome to DataShip: orientation, values, brand, and the business
at a high level.
Week 1. Customer, offer, and product training.
Weeks 2 to 3. Mentor training: shadowing, graded reviews, and short
feedback cycles.
Once you hit a solid success rate on reviews, you start taking clients with close support.
